Meet Schatzi. Schatzi was three years old when she and her sister came to us. We heard about her through a Dachshund rescue group in the Dallas area and made an appointment to see her in February of 2000. It didn't take long for us to decide that both Schatzi and her sister would be welcome in our home.
Both Schatzi and her sister were pure black when we saw them. That is a rarity in Dachshunds, or so we were told by our Vet.
Schatzi was a bit more aggressive and protective than her sister. It was not wise to reach into the car or toward one of us if Schatzi was on guard. She was fearless. Unlike her sister, when Schatzi took a treat from your hand you had to count your fingers. She would sit on her haunches and wait somewhat patiently for a treat, but if it didn't come quickly enough, she would prompt with a sharp bark. I've never seen a Dachshund since that could sit up as long as her.
Schatzi was the primary hunter although her sister would join in. The first day she came home with us she managed to find and dispatch a small green grass snake from our front yard. In later years it was birds and rabbits - anything that would wonder into our fenced yard. Her most unusual feat was to catch and kill a large crow which she dragged through a small dog door and left wings spread on our bedroom floor. The bird was as big as she was!
As Schatzi got older, she developed some white around her muzzle. We often kidded that she would be perfect for a 'Got Milk' commercial.
Schatzi died during a second surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon on 4-8-2010. This was the result of a long struggle with Cushings Disease.
