Meet Muffin. Muffin was about nine when she came to live with us. We saw her online at a Dachshund rescue site in Katy, near Houston, Texas. It was July 4th when we first met and it was love at first sight. She wasted no time in climbing in my lap and giving me 'puppy kisses'. I thought the immediate affection was surprising, but then again she had over a dozen other dachshunds she was living with. She may have just been desprate to escape!
We left with her that day. First, a short stay in Houston then back to North Dallas.
Muffin was meant to be a companion for Sophie who we brought home about a week earlier. Sophie was just nine months old and we felt having an older companion would give her a role model and playmate. Muffin filled the role perfectly.
When we brought Muffin home we knew she hadn't had the best of care in her life and we wouldn't have her very long. Still, we were determined to make her remaining years the best of her life. We had hoped for a longer time with her, but on September 11, 2015, we had to let her go. She had a rapid onset of intestinal pain that could not be moderated and was getting progressively worse. Her suffering was not something we could bear.
One of the things we weren't told about Muffin was that just prior to us adopting her, she had had most of her teeth removed due to peridontal disease. That was a shock, but even with only nine teeth she was an effective hunter. She taught Sophie how to hunt and between the two of them rabbits had little chance. Muffin would run through the bushes in our back yard while Sophie waited for the prey to emerge. What tempted rabbits to keep coming into our fenced back yard was a mystery, but few survived.
Muffin had a playful side as well. She would come up to Sophie and swing her rump around to bump Sophie. This usually resulted in a return rump bump followed by a race through the house until both collapsed from fatigue. We seldom turned on our TV as the four legged entertainment was better than anything on the tube!
