Meet Heidi. Heidi was three years old when she and her sister came to us. We heard about her through a rescue group in the Dallas area and made an appointment to see her in February of 2000. It didn't take long for us to decide that both Heidi adn her sister would be welcome in our home.
Both Heidi and Schatzi (see her on her own page) were pure black when we saw them. That is a rarity in Dachshunds. They were also almost identical. It was only later in their lives that we could easily tell them apart.
Heidi was the more reserved but friendly of the two. When she took a treat from your hand you could hardly tell. She would wait patiently under the table in the hopes that something would magically fall on the ground. She was less interested in being around other dogs, but she liked children. She was always ready for an ear scratch and a rewarding puppy kiss. If only the children knew that Heidi's favorite treat was 'worm jerky'. Why she developed a taste for those dried up worms on the sidewalk we'll never know, but a walk around the block usually included some dried morsels.
Heidi had back surgery three times under our care. All three went extremely well with fast recoveries and full use of legs. Long dogs are prone to back problems and we had the good fortune of being able to prolong her life with quality care.
